Greetings from your Club Captain

What a wonderful picture! Snow-capped mountains, dams filled to the brim! Winter is finally here, and with it, much needed rain and snow. I thank the Lord for His generosity.

Birdie Bogey Bash

For the first time since its inception, there is a waiting list for this very popular event. Fifty pairs have already entered, making it the largest field ever! And there might be even more.

Just to refresh the memory, last year’s event was won by G. Kuhn and M. de Bruin, two ‘outsiders’. Surely our own members would very much like to rectify matters in this respect!

De Wet does Worcester proud

Although he didn’t win, De Wet Boshoff’s second place overall in the B Division of the Windhoek Lager Pairs, played in Windhoek recently, definitely warrants a word of hearty congratulations from all of us. Well done, young man!

Uitkloppe

League news

Our club’s Kruger team’s next encounter is on 21 July away to Swingfit. Worcester currently sits in a distant 5th place in the Overberg section of the competition, yet, only 1 point separates our guys from the top 3. So, it’s still all to play for.

In the Brodie competition Worcester’s next fixture is a home match against Winelands Valley’s log leaders Ceres on 21 July. Trailing by a mere point, this is a must-win situation for non-playing captain Heinrich Bosman and his team with only one match thereafter before the knockout stages.

Allerlei

Piet’s rules corner

In the second round of last week’s KMPG Women’s PGA, South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace was disqualified for using a non-conforming club after she had, unbeknownst to her, damaged her sand wedge by striking a stake in anger after playing a bad shot on the 8th hole. Pace was in breach of Rule 4-3b, which centres on a club being damaged outside the normal routine of play.

Pace angrily slammed her sand wedge into a stake after a missed shot on hole No. 8. She did not realize she had damaged the club, before using the damaged club again for another shot on the same hole.

She then used the same club on No. 14 before she realized it had been damaged. She called for an official and was given the option of continuing play and letting the committee have a look at the club, but declined because she knew she was in violation of Rule 4-3b.

The rule states: If, during a stipulated round, a player’s club is damaged other than in the normal course of play, rendering it non-conforming or changing its playing characteristics, the club must not subsequently be used or replaced during the round.
The club she hit on No. 8 was damaged in the hosel when it hit the stake.

Scratch Golfer

Maria and Stephanie were selected to play together as partners in the Cams Hall Club tournament and met on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, Maria asked, “What's your handicap?”
“Oh, I'm a scratch golfer,” Stephanie replied.
“Really!” exclaimed Maria, suitably impressed that she had been paired with Stephanie.
“Yes, I write down all my good scores and scratch out the bad ones,” responded Stephanie with a smile.
